How to Care for Cast iron Skillet in the perfect way
Cast iron skillet that is well taken care of can last for many years. Cleaning and seasoning the skillet will not only preserve its natural look but also make it look great and keep it safe from rust. Caring for your skillet is paramount. We are going to discuss ways in which you are going to care for your skillet and keep it in a tip-top condition.
1. Wash your skillet after use
You should wash the skillet immediately after use. Wash it before the food you cook crusts over the skillet. This would make your cleaning much easier. It is good if you use a sponge to wipe out food particles and scraps and rinse your skillet with hot water. This will ensure that no food particles left.
- You can decide to use a touch of regular dish soap to dislodge sticky food. This is a good method but doesn’t use too much. Avoid using bleach or any kind of harsh cleansers
- Never put the cast iron skillet in the dishwasher. Detergents will corrode the iron.
2. Remove build up food with vinegar and salt
If the bottom of your skillet has some left food particles, make a mixture of vinegar and salt and use a dish towel to rub or remove it around the bottom of your skillet. It is important to remember that this method requires re-seasoning
3. Dry your skillet thoroughly
It is important to dry your skillet thoroughly. Wet spots on the skillet will result to rust. Always use a dishcloth to dry your skillet after washing.
4. Store your skillet in a safe and dry place.
A dry place is the best place to store your skillet. If you are stacking it with other utensils such as pans, you need to line it with a paper towel to ensure that cleanliness and protect against moisture.
Seasoning your New Skillet
1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
Rub the skillet with oil and bake the oil into the surfaces of cast iron. This builds a coating known as the seasoning. Seasoning protects the skillet from rusting and creates an excellent surface for cooking.
2. Wash and dry your new skillet
Use hot water, scrub, and soap brush to scrub your skillet clean. Cleaning your skillet will help remove chemicals and other residues from the skillet.
3. Coat the skillet with oil.
Oil will bake into the skillet and fuse perfectly with the iron to become a great layer of seasoning.
4. Put the skillet in the oven.
Bake the skillet for at least 2 hours to ensure that the seasoning gets fully formed. After two hours, remove the skillet from the oven and put it on a heat safe surface to cool down.
Dealing with Rust
1. Soak the skillet in a vinegar solution to remove rust. Soaking will help remove the rust and keep your skillet clean. You should not soak your skillet for more than 4 hours.
2. Rinse and dry the skillet. You can use a dish towel to clean the skillet completely.
3. Coat the skillet with oil and bake it for two hours. Put it in an oven preheated to 177 C. After two hours, remove it and let it cool.
