Is Teflon dangerous or harmful for nonstick cookware?
If you worry about is Teflon dangerous or harmful nonstick cookware, then you must read this article. The Teflon or polytetrafluoroethylene on cookware produces a nonstick surface. This chemical is been linked to cancer in lab animals. So, the Teflon is not completely safe to use. And, in the below, I am going tell you what expert agencies say about Teflon nonstick cookware.
What Is Teflon and Is It Dangerous?
The ingestion of Teflon (PTFE) is not reported to be toxic and residual PFOA in the PTFE-coated best non stick frying pan is minimally transferred to food. Moreover, long-term exposure studies to PTFE-fumes and PFOA have not been conducted so we can’t say that it is completely safe. However, the DuPont invented the Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) based substance in 1938, which they branded as Teflon. And, the manufacturer of Teflon today is Chemours. It’s an 80-year-old technology, obviously, it is off-patent. But, Chemours still sells their Teflon branded PTFE coatings to many different cookware manufacturers for use in their pots and pans.
A coating of Teflon or polytetrafluoroethylene on cookware produces a nonstick surface. More than 60 years, Teflon helps prevent eggs and pancakes from sticking in a skillet. Another concern involves perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA, a chemical used as a processing aid for Teflon. Besides, it’s been linked to cancer in lab animals.
Not a Health Hazard:
At the time, Teflon cookware becomes scratched, tiny particles of the coating might chip off. However, the Food and Drug Administration advises that the chips pose no health hazard when they pass through the body. And, the Environment Protection Agency reports that Teflon doesn’t contain PFOA so there are no health issues from using it.
Proper Use of Teflon Cookware:
The important thing is that to use low or medium heat with Teflon skillets and pans. When it is overheated, the cookware releases fumes that may cause flu-like symptoms in humans. At the time, a Teflon skillet overheats and produces fumes it may be fatal to pet birds. The use of plastic or wooden utensils helps protect the Teflon coating from scratches. Besides, never use abrasive cleansers or scouring pads to clean nonstick cookware.
What Do Expert Agencies Say About Teflon Cookware?
According to several national and international agencies, study different substances in the environment to determine if they can cause cancer. Now, a substance that causes cancer or helps cancer grow is called a carcinogen. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is part of the World Health Organization (WHO) and they have classified PFOA as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B). It is based on limited evidence in humans that it can cause testicular and kidney cancer, and limited evidence in lab animals. Some other agencies have not yet formally evaluated whether PFOA can cause cancer.
Finally, I will say that many agencies and reports say that Teflon causes cancer and it is bad for our health. On the other hand, some say it is not harmful. So, I say it is completely safe and you must avoid it on your cooking.
